CELEBRATING THE RESILIANCE of TRADITION

The Sankofa bird.

SANKOFA.  “It’s a bird! A plane! A train!” It is a bird, it is Ghanian, and like all in the bird family, it looks back to prune itself to look pretty.

Africans in America have continued to look back to their ancestors homeland, from which their forefathers have been taken illegally.

Many now living here, were born here, and many have migrated here. 54 countries make up the African continent, however a small few remain dominant including Ghana, the foundation of Pan-Africanism.

In searching for a symbol of how not to forget, “where you came from”, the Sankofa bird was adopted, with its head looking backwards.

In Baltimore Maryland, some 35 years ago, a dance theatre was formed, using the same name. It, like everything else, had its ups and downs, working through the perils of the pandemic, and has returned to the community fully feathered, and strong. The celebration was at the Baltimore Museum of Art.
