What comes to mind? Shakespeare was a famous white poet born in 1564. What would he be doing in Harlem in 2025?
I was curious, so I went to see the play at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, MD.
There was no Shakespeare, instead it was Langston Hughes. He was a premier black poet, born in 1901. He was honored like Shakespeare with the title, Poet Laureate.
Harlem was the epicenter for black creativity in America, and he wrote about the impact of Jazz and Blues and their profound effect on American music and lifestyle, almost the same as what Hip-Hop has done today for the past 50 years. This play will have its rebirth later at the Chesapeake Shakespeare Theatre in Baltimore Md.
