Whoever was who in the musical pop world of the 1920’s, at some time touched down on the Avenue; PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE, BALTIMORE MARYLAND.
I recall seeing a few shows there in the 1970’s, including PEG LEG, a dancer with one wooden leg.
Most conversations about Baltimore’s hey day on the Avenue, pinpoint Bille Holiday and Redd Fox.
Those were the days of SEGREGATION. The African American community congealed in certain areas of the city. They danced, sang and worshipped in just those spaces. The Negroes or Blacks became African Americans; were able to vote since 1964, and took their performances to more integrated stages, namely, theatres, universities, and concert halls.
