THE PERSONIFICATION OF HADES

“Go to hell!!!”. This is not an unfamiliar outburst in American parlance; neither is “I had to do what I had to do”.

Such utterances have inflicted untold damage to the human psyche, especially to those who have voiced, and later suffered in torment.

HELL, is the English language translation of the Greek HADES, and prior to, the Hebrew Aramaic of, SHEOL.

For those of us who believe in Christianity, Luke 16: 19-31, summarizes what happens when one transitions from life on earth, to Hades or Hell.

Some of us conclude that Hades/Hell as a place of rest/grave, others a place of torment. Profound lessons of faith in those 13 verses; so much so, artists created a musical in 2019, that won a slew of awards. Now in 2026, this musical is on film.

I am overly enthused with this film for multiple reasons. In this HADES is not only a town, but it also has a King, quite similar to the one in Luke chapter 19. He likes living underground and welcomes all “who don’t give a damn”, for they do end up in HELL/HADES.

The shocker is, HADES has a wife, she is Black, and the only one to temper his avarice to increase his underground dwellers/sufferers.

This movie is a must for everyone. It has political relevance to what is happening in our country today, and me being a cultural commentator, there is a trombone player that surpasses magnificence; and a display of voice ranges from opera to R&B.

Schools for the Arts, should be taking students to see this movie. Were I still teaching, along with taking my 11-year-olds to swim on the beach on Fridays for extra curricula, a movie like this would have been added to my menu.
